In Virginia, child support does not simply stop on a child’s eighteenth birthday in every case. It generally runs until the child turns 18, but it continues to age 19 or high school graduation, whichever comes first, for a child who is still a full-time high school student, not self-supporting, and living at home. The general rule is age 18
The starting point is straightforward. Under Va. Code § 20-124.2, a parent’s duty to pay child support generally continues until the child turns 18. That is the default that applies to most orders, and for many families it is the whole story. But Virginia builds in a couple of important exceptions that can extend support, and one rule about multiple children that catches a lot of parents off guard.
The high school exception
Support does not always stop at exactly 18. It continues for a child who is 18 but still a full-time high school student, not self-supporting, and living in the home of the parent who receives support, until that child either turns 19 or graduates from high school, whichever happens first. The idea is simple and humane: a child who is finishing high school at home should not lose support in the middle of senior year just because a birthday arrived.
More Than One Child? The Number Does Not Just Drop
This is the big one. When an order covers several children and the oldest ages out, the support amount does not automatically fall to the next tier. The order stays in force at its current number until it is recalculated, usually by filing for modification. Do not simply start paying less on your own, because the difference can pile up as arrears on the existing order.

Support for a child with a serious disability
Virginia allows support to continue past the usual age in a specific situation: where a child has a severe and permanent mental or physical disability that existed before the child aged out, the child is unable to live independently and support themselves, and the child lives in the home of the parent seeking support. College is generally not required
Many parents are surprised to learn that Virginia courts generally do not order a parent to pay child support or college costs for a healthy adult child in college. The duty usually ends with high school under the rules above. Parents can absolutely agree to share college expenses, and when that agreement is written into a court order or a signed contract, it becomes enforceable like any other promise. But absent that kind of agreement, college support is not something a court will impose on its own, so if it matters to you, the time to address it is while you are putting an agreement together, not years later.
Arrears do not disappear
One last point that matters a great deal. When the duty to pay current support ends, any past-due support, the arrears, does not vanish with it. Those amounts remain owed and collectible, and a parent who fell behind can still be pursued for them after the children are grown. Ending support going forward is not the same as wiping the slate clean on what was already missed.

If your child is turning 18 but still in high school at home, expect support to run to graduation or 19, whichever comes first. If you have more than one child on the order, do not reduce payments yourself when the oldest ages out, because you need a modification first or arrears can build. And remember that past-due support survives, so staying current always beats falling behind.
Know the right end date, file when the order should change, and you avoid both overpaying and building arrears.
